The kid bought a $20,000 gold necklace with a diamond-encrusted fish medallion just because he could, chump change for someone who earned $55M last year. Nor is it a surprise that Jennifer Lopez tops the list, due to her career resurgence and hefty paycheck from her American Idol gig, a music career that’s proven to be timeless, and an arsenal of blockbuster romantic comedies that rival Julia Roberts’ collection. Rihanna sets trends and controversy with 140 characters or less on Twitter. The young are now the powerful, as indicated by the annual Forbes issue, and a tanned generation with expert knowledge of social media are the catalysts behind this new set of power players. What a refreshing sign of even more change to come.

Mary J. Blige could sing the phone book and make it sound like a Grammy-worthy ballad. And recently, she’s experimented with rock classics by U2 and Led Zeppelin, and managed to brilliantly make them all her own. So it comes as no surprise that she was tapped to appear in the upcoming film adaptation of Rock of Ages. She’ll take the big screen alongside Dancing With the Stars vet Julianne Hough, and blockbuster king Tom Cruise.

Rock of Ages hits theaters June 15, but for now, check out Mary’s version of the Journey anthem, “Anyway You Want It.”

Songs don’t come more genre-blended than Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy gem, “Lost In The World. The track is a sonic hodgepodge of old school Beatnik vibes from the late Gil Scott- Heron’s wise prose, and the modern-day indie folk stylings of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Now the song has undergone even more musical cross-pollination, thanks to Dutch trance master, DJ Tiesto. The remix somehow maintains the grit of the original, as Tiesto takes the mastered beat to another dimension.

Jay-Z continues his 2012 tanning takeover. Following his AMEX partnered, interactive “sync” show at SXSW and his magnanimous Carnegie Hall performance, Brooklyn’s-favorite son has partnered with Budweiser, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and the city of Philadelphia to curate a two-day music festival this September 1 and 2. Entitled “Made In America,” there are expected to be over 20 performing acts, most of which are already confirmed. “This is a phenomenal opportunity for the United Way and this community and it couldn’t have come at a better time,” said United Way representative, Jill Michael during yesterday’s press conference. “We love the ‘Made In America’ theme because it talks about resilience. It talks about how this city can’t be held down.”

Paul Chibe, the US Chief Marketing Officer for Anheuser-Busch, echos Michael’s sentiment. “Budweiser has a long tradition of partnering with great musical acts like sponsoring the Rolling Stones or supporting Superfest,” he said. “There’s no better person that defines being ‘Made In America’ than Jay-Z—an entrepreneur, artist, business man, and great guy.”

Jay-Z on the “Made In America” music festival:

“Whenever I enter into a project, I try to hit on some touch points. The first being, is it great? You can’t hit great every time but sometimes once we start there we’ll end up in a great place. The second is it going to push the culture forward? I think this concert will do that. I think Budweiser has done that in the past with Superfest, where they gave a platform for artists to perform—mainly with hip-hop and r&b artists when the opportunities weren’t as plentiful for us as they are today. Third, is there a philanthropic opportunity? That’s where the United Way comes in. We just did some brilliant work at my Carnegie Hall concert. We raised a lot of money to help those less fortunate. They’re also going to work with some local charities in New Jersey [and] in the greater Philadelphia area. Everyone always knows my love affair with Philly from the amazing, talented artists I’ve signed from here to the film work that I’m about to do with Will Smith and James Lasiter at Overbrook. And the last is, I have to make my momma proud.
